The high density polyurethane foam was first utilized during WWII as insulation for refrigerators and airplanes. It provided the perfect replacement for other materials such as balsa wood. It was cheaper, easier to shape, available and started to impact many aspects of manufacturing, from hulls to hydor foiled rails to fiberglass to floatation. Today it impacts almost every aspect of our lives. Building and construction, transportation, furniture and bedding, appliances, packing, clothing, adhesives and protective coating and paint.
